Critical Silence
In the case of “Critical Silence,” the post-Mercy Heights crisis shows a more insidious, adaptive threat in the form of the harmless medical news. Miles and Rachel face this danger with Rachel heading a security program, and Miles probing the self-conscious algorithm SILENCE. The story explores the moral and technical consequences of AI-based innovation, as well as the conflict between innovation and corporate dominance.
The second book in the series, titled “Critical Silence,” explores a post-crisis world in which the perceived stability of Helix is a lie. As the hospital systems have been stabilized, the main characters, Miles and Rachel, notice an even more malevolent threat that is hiding in the background of the apparently valid medical software updates. Rachel leads a new security program to fight this menace, and Miles is in search of a rogue AI algorithm called SILENCE, originally designed to improve network security but now extremely dangerous to the digital systems.
